Teachers and artists 2011

RigaTangoWinterFest welcomes two Argentine tango teacher couples:
Rui Barroso & Inês Gomes from Portugal and
Zigmunds Abolins & Margita Antonova from Latvia.

Rui Barroso & Inês Gomes from Portugal

Rui and Inês have learned and danced Traditional Tango - both Milonguero and Salón style, and also Tango Nuevo. Rui and Inês believe that uniqueness in tango doesn't come from specialization in a particular style, but from the ability to dance all of them. Being unique as a leader or as a follower comes from being able to adapt to circumstances, to music and to different partners. And if the dance partner allows it, one can - during a tanda with 4 tangos - actually dance in four completely different ways. That is why they often like to explore the different kinds of closed and open embrace in their workshops. In addition, they often mix the different embraces in a sequence in order to teach students to manage the changing of embrace in the middle of the dance without losing stability. This will open alternatives to interpret the music and create different feelings and energies in the dance. When teaching Milonga and Vals, Rui and Inês like to compare and differentiate the rhythmical structures of these dances with Tango.
Rui and Ines continously explore the many forms of tango and dance and teach also tango kizomba, tango bachata and tango salsa.
Rui and Inês have been working together for the past 3 years and have taught workshops all over Portugal as well as in England, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. They have also choreographed and danced in a 90min Theatre Show called "Recuerdos" which is still running in Portugal.
The main influencers on Rui and Inês’s dance are Chicho Frumboli & Juana Sepulveda (open embrace technique), Sebastian Arce & Mariana Montes (closed embrace technique), and Alejandra Mantiñan, but also Adrian Veredice & Alejandra Hobert, Esteban Morgado & Claudia Codega, Pablo Rodrigues & Noelia Hurtado, Pablo Villarraza & Dana Frigoli have had a major impact. In Portugal they have also worked for 2 years with Juan Cappriotti and Graciana Romeo (Argentinean dancers living and working in Lisbon), both as dancers and as teachers at their tango school.

Rui has been dancing and teaching tango for 14 years (as long as he has been teaching Martial Arts). He started to learn Ballroom Dancing when he was 13 Years Old. At the age of 17 he was already teaching and investing on Salsa and Argentine Tango. Nowadays, Rui has his own dance school in Portugal called THE STREAM and teaches regularly in Coimbra, Lisbon and Oporto.

Inês has been dancing tango for 5 years and she’s now finishing her degree in dance at the Superior School of Dance in Portugal (Escola Superior de Dança). Inês has a solid background on Classical and Contemporary Dance.

Zigmunds Abolins & Margita Antonova from Latvia

Margita and Zigmunds has been teaching Tango Salon and Tango Milonguero and making shows of Argentine tango for 7 years. They own the first and the only tango club in the Baltics „El Naranjerito”, which celebrates 2 years anniversary in October 12, 2011. Margita and Zigmunds have had students in their tango club from all over the world – Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Germany, Australia.

For Zigmunds and Margita tango is much more than a social dance. Tango is creation in itself – this is what makes it unique. They have developed a teaching technique that helps comprehend the essence of tango movements and also retains the ancient enchantment of the dance. They use the traditional tango technique based on natural motion, exercise and practical training.
At  classes, Zigmunds and Margita pay attention to the fundamental concepts of the dance, such as: tango posture, embrace and step, balance, navigation on the dance floor, musicality and elegance. Connection between partners is essential in tango. Zigmunds and Margita teaches, how to dance in harmony with the partner, feel the music and converse through the dance so that your partner and you can mutually enjoy the creation of a new tango artwork.

Margita started to dance at the age of 5 and since then never stopped dancing. She has experience in Latvian Folk and Ball Room dancing, Swing, Show and Variety dance. At the same time she loved sports and got involved in orienteering sport at 10 and later in sports aerobics.
Margita studies Architecture and gets a Diploma in Architecture and runs her own company until tango changes her life.
In 2003 Margita made her first steps in tango, her first teacher being Janis Elbrets from Latvia. But first experience in dancing tango abroad she gained in Tango Camp Sweden in 2005 followed by regular trips to Buenos Aires. Her favourite teachers of Argentine tango are Fabian Peralta, Raul Bravo, Claudio Hoffman and Pilar Alvarez, Gabriel Misse, Lorena Ermocida. She took many classes with Raul Bravo and got appraisal for her work and development of tango in Latvia.

Zigmunds has been interested in dance since childhood. He danced at home every time when radio played his favourite music. He went in for cycling sport at the age of 14 and later graduated Sports Academy getting Diploma of Sport Teacher. He had danced sport rock’n’roll and participated in the World Championship in Acrobatic Rock’n’roll in Mannheim in 2000. After he danced such dances as balboa, step dance, authentic jazz or charlestone.
His favourite teachers of tango are Fabian Peralta, Gustavo Naveira, Ariadna Naveira and Fernando Sanchez, Gabriel Misse, Diego El Pajaro Riemer and Maria Belen Giachello, Ricardo Barrios and Laura Melo.
